ICO carries out survey as part of SBA Campaign

Students are concerned that the information they post online might affect their future job prospects, according to a new survey from the ICO.

Your newsWith the economic downturn leading to ever increasing competition for jobs, the ICO has uncovered that 4 in 10 young people are worried about how the information they give out on websites such as Facebook will impact on their future job prospects.

Other findings from the survey confirmed that 1 in 3 students haven’t redirected their post from their last address. Failure to do this can make people a potential target for identity theft and is a problem that can be easily fixed by setting up a redirection at the Post Office. Students should also make sure those organisations that they have regular contact with, such as doctors, banks and their university’s administrative department have their new address.

The survey results coincided with the launch of the ICO’s 2011 Student Brand Ambassador Campaign. The project will see students from 15 universities across the UK, including Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Ulster, being recruited to raise awareness amongst their fellow students of the importance of keeping personal information safe. If you come across an ICO Student Brand Ambassador at your university, be sure to say hello and find out how you can help keep your details secure.
