ICO hosts information sharing event in Glasgow

News release: 15 June 2011

Organisations from across the public, voluntary and charity sectors will be discussing the importance of effective data sharing at an event organised by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in Glasgow tomorrow.

The Information Sharing Conference marks the Scottish launch of the ICO’s data sharing code of practice - a good practice guide packed with tips on how to share personal information appropriately that can be applied to all sectors. The event will highlight the advice given in the new code as well as providing an opportunity to discuss real-life case studies and the issues they raise.

Assistant Commissioner for Scotland, Ken Macdonald, said:

"Public concern around data protection is high. Our research has found that 60% of individuals believe that they have lost control of the way their personal information is processed. It is therefore vital that organisations get it right on data sharing."

"We look forward to welcoming over 100 representatives from across the public, voluntary and charity sector to our Information Sharing Conference. With more and more services being provided jointly by these sectors across Scotland, organisations need to ensure that they are sharing the information they hold effectively and taking the necessary precautions to keep it secure. We stand ready to give practical, hands-on advice."

The event at the Scottish Youth Theatre in Glasgow will include presentations from the Information Commissioner, Christopher Graham, and Ben Plouviez, Head of Information Services at the Scottish Government.
