Event: The future of data protection in Europe

This two-day ICO event looked at some of the newer aspects of the EU’s revised data protection legislative proposals. It provided practical information, advice and guidance from those already doing some of the things that are in the law for the first time, or who have valuable experiences to share. Relevant to delegates across sectors and of all sizes as well as other regulators, government representatives and MEPs.

The workshop topics were:

• Individual rights: right to be forgotten and to erasure; right to data portability
• Individual rights: rights to lodge a complaint and to judicial remedies against Data Protection Authorities, controllers and processors
• Responsibilities and obligations: accountability provisions – demonstrating compliance, documentation, DPIAs, privacy by design

Event: ICO Data Protection Officer conference 2012

Registration of interest is now open for the next ICO Data Protection Officer conference, scheduled to take place on 6 March 2012 in Manchester. The conference will be covering topics such as cloud computing, anonymisation and changes to European legislation.  The full conference agenda will be published in the next few weeks.

Event: The Business Case for Data Protection and Business

Date: 10am to 4pm, 18 October 2011
Location: City Hotel, Londonderry, Northern Ireland

The Data Protection Act 1998 places responsibilities on all organisations to process personal information that it holds in a fair and proper way. To assist the business sector to meet their legal obligations, on 18 October 2011, the ICO will be holding a Data Protection seminar titled 'The Business Case for Data Protection and Business' in the City Hotel, L’Derry.

The event will feature speakers from the ICO and will focus upon the application of the DPA in various aspects of business, including employment, sales and physical security. It will cover issues as the obtaining and retaining of information about staff and customers, recording of CCTV images and disclosing or sharing personal data.

The event is free and a light lunch will be provided.

Event: ICO seminar on privacy and data anonymisation

The ICO's seminar on privacy and data anonymisation took place in London on Wednesday 30 March 2011. Key speakers included Sir Mark Walport from the Wellcome Trust, Nicola Westmore from the Cabinet Office and Dr Kieran O'Hara from the University of Southampton. They presented different approaches to this complex subject. The seminar looked at current practice, the risks associated with anonymisation and possible solutions for the future.
