The future of data protection in the EU
Following the publication of the European Commission’s proposal for a new general Data Protection Regulation and Directive on 25 January 2012, the ICO has produced an initial analysis of the proposals. The paper provides an overview of the most significant parts of the proposed instruments and draws attention to those aspects which we believe still need further consideration. We hope our views will help to inform the debate and will be of use to all those – in the UK and beyond - with an interest in the successful implementation of next-generation European data protection law.

Information Commissioner’s revised guidance about the issue of monetary penalties
The ICO's guidance about the issue of monetary penalties has been revised to incorporate changes to the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003. These changes enable the Information Commissioner to serve a monetary penalty notice on a person who seriously breaches the 2003 Regulations.
The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act of 2008 amended the Data Protection Act 1998 to give the Information Commissioner the power, under certain circumstances, to serve a monetary penalty notice on a data controller.

Spam text survey – a selection of respondent’s comments
