Collecting people’s information
On 12 June 2009 we launched the privacy notices code of practice, which explains organisations’ obligations when collecting information about members of the public. To accompany the code, we produced two short films on how to fairly collect people’s information in two common situations, on the street and over the phone.

Personal information toolkit – public information films
As part of our campaign to raise awareness amongst the public about the importance of protecting their personal information, we have produced a series of public information films. These will highlight the problems people can face if they are victims of identity crime or if inaccurate information is held about them.
The films are supported by our personal information toolkit, which is a step by step guide to help individuals understand how to protect and manage their personal information. The toolkit includes advice and tips for the general public on:
- how to access the information that organisations hold about them;
- how to correct inaccurate information; and
- how to protect themselves against identity theft.
Our public information films been produced by COI and will be distributed to over 100 terrestrial and digital TV channels. As public information films are not commercials, they are shown in donated airtime.
To view these films, please click the images below. The films are in MPEG format.
