Surveillance Society: Turning debate into action

Aims
The conference aims to build on our previous report, 'A Surveillance Society', and will be looking forward to actions that can be taken to deal with the consequences of a surveillance society.
We intend to launch the Privacy Impact Assessment Handbook, a new tool for the UK, at the conference and will also present the results of research we have commissioned into public attitudes to surveillance.
Timings and Programme
The conference will run from 10.15 until 16.30 followed by a drinks reception until 18.30 in the evening. There is no charge for attendance but
places are limited to 130 delegates and will be allocated strictly on a first come, first served basis.

Richard Thomas - Information Commissioner and David Smith - Deputy Information Commissioner with responsibility for data protection.
10.30 Public attitudes to surveillance
Sue Fox - ICO Director of Communications and External Relations will introduce a presentation by Oliver Murphy (Diagnostics Social & Market Research) of the results of research commissioned by the ICO into public attitudes to surveillance.
11.10 Coffee
11.30 Privacy impact assessements around the world
Professor Colin Bennett of University of Victoria, Canada will speak about “Privacy impact assessments around the world”.
12.00 ICO’s Privacy impact assessment handbook
Jonathan Bamford (Assistant Information Commissioner) will introduce a presentation by Adam Warren of Loughborough University to launch the ICO’s Privacy impact assessment handbook.

Phil Carey Head of Road Pricing Framework Division of the Department for Transport will speak about “Road pricing and privacy in practice”.
